How to Give a Relaxing Back Massage

A good back massage can be very relaxing. Knowing how to give a great back massage is quite simple. You can learn the basics of giving someone a quality back massage without attending a masseuse school.

Have the recipient of the back massage lie on their stomach. Use a firm, comfortable surface. You want to use something that will allow you access to their entire back without having to extend yourself to reach it. While standing or kneeling at their side, put one hand on their lower back. Place the other between the shoulder blades in the area just over the heat. Using your thumbs, apply pressure along both sides of the spine at the same time. For best results, start at the lower back and work your way towards the neck area.

Softly apply massage oil using long strokes. Rub the oil in by sliding your palms done the spine to the pelvis area. Next, reach your hands around the hips heading back up towards the shoulder blades. You want your hands to remain in constant contact with the back. Gliding your hands from one area to another will have a better affect than removing your hands and starting in a new area.

If you can feel tension areas in the recipient of the massage, work on these hard, tight knotted up areas first. This will help the person relax. Use a clockwise circle motion with your fingertips along the muscles close to the spine and shoulder blades as these areas are generally very tense. Gently rotating the arms will loosen the shoulder joints, resulting in improved blood flow.

Receiving a back massage offers many benefits. You will feel relaxed and become more aware of your body. Your circulation will improve and your body will release toxins. It is important that you never put too much pressure on the spine when giving a back massage. Also avoid areas on the body where you see broken skin, blisters, or areas that may be infected.
